it's not "unfortunately" that the "game mechanics" are not gonna protected by the copyright. Game mechanics are finite and therefore required to be public knowledge. Same as common words which nobody can "own" specific word. "Character powers" can be protected, though not mechanically but same as any Marvel characters which got protected for the very specific things such as Iron man. While you can have color schemes and simple shapes similar to Iron man, you must have something distinguish enough from the direct usage of Iron man for the "common fair use" which covered all the combination of colors or simple shapes but not for distinct characters. That being said, who own Slime from Dragon Quest? Blue ball with eyes. Obviously you can use blue ball with eyes and call it slime, but not the distinct face of the Dragon Quest slimes. I'll be honest, law stuffs are just too stupid. People are always there to exploit others for their own benefits. It's the way of uncivilized people to make some gains.

I really like this video. I think there are many people who really care about the work they are doing and the community they are building. Those people will naturally reach out to creators in the way you suggest. The 'hello sir/madam' messages can just be ignored, as their lack of interest in the community will show through if they somehow manage to get on a podcast. Doesn't benefit anyone...

From someone who sees a lot of fun being cut from video games because they are just chopping up other successful games to take a mixmashed hodgepodge of features and call it a game (while also cutting their creative staff to a skeleton crew) I'd love to show this clip to a board room and other c-level execs at a host of game development companies

Also, I have backed about three of your solo game of the month games on game found. I am not a solo player and one of my subscribers on my channel asked me about solo games, so when I ran across your solo games, they interested me so I bought them. So my solo experience is completely in your hands lol😂 I also didn’t know that you were responsible for making those games until today. So what a cool coincidence good luck on the games.

Chess has uncertainty, but that can be mistaken as luck. Luck depends on something random, but player decisions do not qualify as random (even if they decide randomly). Let's agree on basic definitions, please.

Disagree about MOBA games being over at draft. Sure it can influence it, even give you a strong edge; but its never just 100% over off the rip. You can always get diff items or play different to adapt.

Wow that video is a true goldmine for someone like me just starting to get into gamedesign. Thank you very much! Also, #46: "Don't worry about art" - I can relate as someone who already spent alot of time designing icons for a dungeon crawler idea, without knowing if the game has any potential other than in my head. But designing icons is fun, so it is definitely not a total waste of time :P

I agree with Jorge. Having the courage to put yourself out there is tough. Building relationships and networks of people takes time and has to be authentic. I believe that it has way more to do with your ultimate success than any "unfair" advantages that people might be born with though. (I've heard a couple really interesting discussions about how some things that are initially disadvantages can actually turn out to be advantages, because people are forced to build skills to overcome those disadvantages.)

Amazing talk! Lots of valuable insights and tips. Just a suggestion: You should ask concise questions, and give the guest time to formulate more coherent and structured answers. You can discuss it further after that, but I think it's important to establish a clear main answer first. It also fixes the problem of guests' voice getting quieter and quieter the more they have to think deeply while speaking.
